Farm Business

DSCN2026 (Large)
We are just LOVING our Red Star hens. They have a sweet temperment and faithfully lay their yummy brown eggs. We have been blessed with some SUPER LARGE double yolks too. Since we are getting an average dozen of eggs per day, we have been able to bless folks with eggs and even sold some this past week. God is so good to us! Praise Him for everlasting mercy! EnJOY every moment.

Got eggs?

The Joy Corner Farm is producing approximately a dozen eggs per day now.  Did you know that free-range, farm-fresh eggs have LESS cholesterol than supermarket eggs? Once you eat a farm-fresh egg, you will never want to buy supermarket eggs again. Stop by The Joy Corner Farm and pick up a dozen fresh eggs for just $2. EnJOY every moment!

Second egg!!!

The JOY Corner Farm is productive again!!! Frank found our second egg tonight. Abby found the first one on Saturday Morning 10/3/09. The Red Star hens are 19 weeks old now. The cost of the first egg we estimate approximately $400. Let’s pray these ladies start laying more eggs every day!

When oh when will we get EGGS???

We researched and decided to go with Red Star chickens. We got 17 chicks on 5/22/09. For some silly reason, I had 14 weeks til laying eggs in my brain. Well, guess what??? I was WRONG!!! I did some research on McMurray Hatchery and found the following info:

We have finally found the sex link BROWN EGG LAYER that meets our strict specifications; easy to raise, lays large brown eggs, and has a good feed conversion ratio. A “sex-link” chicken is one, which at time of hatch, can be sexed by its color. RED STAR: These hens will mature with feathers that are reddish brown with flecks of white throughout. The males are all white with nice yellow skin. (They will not retain the same characteristics in future.) At approximately 22 weeks these hens will start to lay and lay they will. We’re sure this hardy bird will become a favorite of yours as it lays eggs right through hot or cold weather. No wonder it’s called the Red Star.

More chicken info:

This is a Red Star hen. Red Stars are a cross between a Leghorn, a Rhode Island Red and a New Hampshire. Red Stars are a sex-linked breed. Red Stars are “sex-linked” which means that the females are a different color than the males when they are chicks. That makes it easy to distinguish between the females and the males when they are chicks. The hen is red with white tail feathers. The cock is all white. Red Stars are excellent layers of brown eggs! Red Stars have a single comb.

Ok, so that brings us to around third week of October. Guess I best GROW SOME PATIENCE ***uh-oh, not that again, Lord!***

EnJOY every moment! I love my little ladies and can’t wait for the first eggs!

First Farm Business

[nggallery id=1]

The JOY Corner Farm has had our first business transaction on Friday. We sold three of our sweet Red Star hens to our dear homeschool friends so Tim (one of their roosters ~ a frizzle) has some ladies to keep him happy. We look forward to seeing the ***fruit*** of our transaction as we are promised a few of the babies. EnJOY a few pics from the transaction.

In the beginning…

My goal is to be a creative helpmeet to my best friend and soulmate, Frank. We’ve been married for 20 years and have been blessed with five sweet blessings from the Lord. DS 15, DS 11, Josiah (in Heaven 3/8/2000), DD 7, and DS 5 have been lent to us from the Lord. We have been on the homeschool journey for 15 years and have at least 14 more years to go! Our newest adventure is the JOY Corner Farm. We have 17 Red Star chicks, 3 indoor rabbits, and 1 Rhodesian Ridgeback. May we continually give all the Praise, Glory, and Honor to our Saviour and Lord Jesus Christ.
